2010 marks the 1100th anniversary of the foundation of the Cluny Abbey, in Southern Burgundy. A hunderd years after its foundation, Cluny had a major influence over religion, architecture and politics all over Europe, seeding the continent with many Cluniac sites of which well over a hundred are still visible today.
The Cluny council, together with many people and organisations, has developed an ambitious programme of festivities which began in September 2009. Part of the organisation is taken charge of by "door committees", twelve in all, each covering a specific geographic area. The next big job of the committees is to organise the arrival and accomodation of an expected 10 000+ visitors over Septmber 10 to 12 for the "Europe in Cluny" event that will close the official festivities. The job also includes decorating each door and related neighborood and a big banquet planned for Sunday September 12.
Our door is called the Orange door, or the Mâcon door, and projects South by South-East from Cluny down to Rome and beyond. If you are in that area and plan to come to Cluny for September event, this blog is here to help you find information, and to help us by knowing who is coming.
